Bollywood for most of us means a handful of superstars controlling the box office game. We wait for the movies of those actors and reserve our theatre experience for their release dates. Very few people like to watch films by the less popular actors/directors that again raises the trend of superstar movies in Bollywood.

1) Masaan (Netflix)

The critically acclaimed movie Masaan won an award at Cannes Film Festival. But, it was not a big success at the box office. A low-caste boy falls in love with an upper-caste girl. It happens on the banks of the river Ganges where people strictly follow moral traditions.

2) Udaan ( Netflix)

After being expelled from the school, Rohan returns home to his abusive and strict father. He meets his younger half brother about whom he wasn’t aware. His father makes him work in his factory and study engineering but he wants to be a writer.


3) Dhobi Ghat (Mumbai Diaries) (Netflix)

Four people cross paths in Mumbai. One, a washerman who wants to become an actor, a banker who turned photographer, a painter looking for inspiration and a newly-married immigrant who makes vlogs.

4) Stanley Ka Dabba (Disney+ Hotstar)

Stanley is a little school-going boy. He doesn’t bring lunch box to school and his classmates share their lunch with him. A teacher notices this and warns Stanley to bring his own lunch box if he doesn’t want to get expelled from the school.

5) Ugly (Prime Video, Disney+ Hotstar, Zee5)

The 10-year-old daughter of an aspiring actor disappears and many incidents of violence and corruption start to unfold. A psychological thriller by Anurag Kashyap, Ugly is one of the must-watch movies.

6) Badla (Netflix)

Badla is an engaging suspense thriller. Naina, a married woman hires a lawyer when her lover is found dead in mysterious circumstances. A series of events turned the story upside down.

7) Bhonsle (SonyLiv)

Bhonsle is a retired policeman who is diagnosed with stage 4 brain tumour. He decides to take a stand when migrants of his locality are targeted by the local politicians.

8) Trapped (ZEE5)

A man accidentally locks himself in his new apartment in an empty high-rise building. What follows is his endless struggle to survive without food, water and electricity.

9) Margarita, with a Straw (Netflix)

A teenager Kalki Koechlin who is suffering from cerebral palsy relocates to America for undergraduate studies. She finds herself dealing with her disability, bisexuality and self-discovery.

10) Ankho Dekhi (2013)

Babuji rejects her daughter’s plea to marry a boy of her choice because the people around him convince babuji that the boy is not good. After meeting the boy, babuji finds him quite decent. After this incident, he decides to only believe in what he actually sees with his eyes.

11) Dasvidaniya

A simple man living a nondescript life comes to know that he will die in a few months. He makes a list of ten wishes and sets out to fulfil them before he dies.

12) 15 Park Avenue

A schizophrenic girl Meethi lives with her sister. She constantly gets hallucinations of having an imaginary family at 15, Park Avenue, Kolkata.

14) My Brother… Nikhil (2005) (ZEE5)

While a famous swimmer deals with the repercussions of announcing that he is HIV positive, his sister and boyfriend are always by his side.

15) Do Dooni Chaar (2010) (Netflix)

A middle-class school teacher tries to keep his wife and children happy by promising to buy a car. The hilarious cycle of events that follow will leave you in splits.

16) Phas Gaye Re Obama (2010) (SonyLiv)

A bankrupt NRI comes to India to sell off his property to get his debt clear. He is kidnapped by a bunch of goons who think that he is a rich guy.

17) I Am Kalam (2011) (Netflix)

A poor boy is inspired by the life of the former President of India, A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. He changes his name to Kalam and has a dream to meet President Kalam someday.

A middle-class ambitious housewife becomes a radio jockey for a late-night relationship show. The movie revolved around her struggle in making people around her believe that she can manage her home and job equally well.

19) Oye Lucky Lucky Oye (Netflix)

A happy-go-lucky thief reflects on his life in police custody. The hilarious comedy is the story of a thief named ‘Lucky’ who manages to escape after big robberies.

20) Shahid (SonyLiv)

Shahid is based on the life of a lawyer and human rights activist Shahid Azmi who was assassinated in 2010. He is criticized for supporting terrorists and ultimately killed.
