Why Women Suffered the Most due to COVID19

Women being the more vulnerable sex, suffered more during COVID-19. The pandemic came as a disaster for everyone. Jobs, finances, education, and even relationship miseries are a part of its consequences. The fairer sex is at the worse end of this pandemic. They have to look after their families, households, children’s studies and undoubtedly their jobs. Women seek perfection in their performance and COVID-19 imposed an imbalance in the harmonious work-life balance. Moreover, the biased approach towards women at home and workplace added to their woes. You have no choice but to agree with me.

COVID-19 added to the food insecurity for women

Women around the world endured more food insecurity than men. Given the widespread social norms, women eat less at home or skip meals if required. Unequal distribution of food at home becomes a thing to worry about because the health of the women is at risk. At work, women are given lower salaries than men in the same position. This controls their habit of spending on food. Women spend less on food than men and it is a cause of concern. Women are also at a greater risk of catching the pandemic because of poor health.

Surge in Violence Against Women during COVID-19

Violence against women and girls increased by 33% in some countries due to Covid-19. The world was going through a setback and women became the victims in the hands of their partners and bosses. Depressed men find in their women partners, the easiest channel to transfer their anguish. Domestic violence also increased with the surge in COVID-19. I have no idea why there is a hue and cry over “gender equality” when it is just a phrase in the dictionary of a few privileged.

More women left jobs due to COVID-19

Women have been overburdened since the onset of the pandemic. The lockdowns brought extra responsibilities for them. Many women left their jobs because they feel that their families need them more. They are now juggling cooking food, cleaning homes, teaching children, disinfecting spaces and whatnot. Men can’t accomplish ‘all’ these tasks even if they intend to. I wonder why the woman who is multitalented and adaptable is given less importance in our society.

“GLOBALLY, WOMEN DO THREE-QUARTERS OF ALL UNPAID CARE WORK AND COMPRISE OF TWO-THIRDS OF THE PAID – WHICH CONTRIBUTES TRILLIONS OF DOLLARS TO THE GLOBAL ECONOMY.”

Increase in Child marriages during Covid-19

The pandemic came as an end to the formal education for a lot of girl children. Many people find girls a burden on themselves and feel relieved after marrying them off. I’m not speaking of a few poor and uneducated people, it is a tendency of the majority of people in developing countries. Sad but true, Covid-19 gave those people an excuse to marry off their daughters at a young age.

“MATERNAL DEATHS INCREASED BY BETWEEN 8% AND 39% PER MONTH IN LOW- AND MIDDLE-INCOME COUNTRIES, DUE TO A COVID-19 RELATED REDUCTION OF PERINATAL CARE.

The pandemic has been cruel to all of us but women face multiple gender-based issues because this is how our society is formed. Is it still early to think of changing the basis of the societies?

  2. I think there are many other ways to look into it women often keep themselves at the end of the pyramid when it comes to needs and fulfillment. It’s a flaw we have been bearing since generations. I did not read any data which specifically said women suffered more however in a society like ours as it is pretty common.

Covid has shown its affects on many. I agree women had to quit their jobs due to family responsibilities. I wasn’t aware of increase in girl marriage. It was a well drafted post.

  5. Pandemic was surely very hard on women. It put them through situations where they had to juggle between professional and personal lives. And yes a lot of things increased during pandemic including the domestic violence which was very sad.

If women start taking their health as priority then many things would change, and society will also need to give the same priority. I think slowly we all are trying for a change and blogposts like this is surely a reminder for many to relook on their though process.

While discussing effects of Covid on the society women have been unfairly marginalized. It has indeed been challenging for them on many levels. Well written post!

  8. Did women suffer the most during Covid? I don’t think they did. It was the families of those who died in Covid that suffered the most I feel. Unemployment was not just specific to women alone. A lot of men also lost their jobs, especially in the travel and F&B sectors. Let us not generalize and make it look like women only suffered when that’s not the case.
