I clearly remember, the year 2020 started with usual excitement, resolutions and beginning-of-the-year freshness. There were dreams and aspirations bubbling in hearts. Wandering in the fresh air was bliss. Hugs and physical meetings were (still) a standard practice. An unknown, unheard virus disrupted everything we used to perceive as normal. COVID-19, the name by which the deadly virus goes by, is a household identity now. It’s hardly been ten months and the COVID has become the most spoken, the most common word of all times. (exaggeration?)

Theory A) Chinese Virus?

The V-I-R-U-S when broke out triggered all minds to think about its origin. Many guesses started pouring in. One of the major theories was that the Virus has been intentionally spread by China to weaken its rival countries. This theory was favoured on social media by the US and its supporters and most of the other countries had the same opinion. US President Donald Trump also referred to COVID-19 as the ‘Chinese Virus’ (Ouch!) Mr Trump was trolled for being racist but everybody believed that critical evidence of COVID-19 seems to have originated in China. 

Theory B) Virus from the US?!

While the whole world was busy accusing China of the spread of the novel Coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, a popular social media platform in China, Weibo was flooded with another view. According to China, COVID-19 was introduced to China by 300+ US Military fellows who had attended ‘Military World Games’ in Wuhan in October 2019.  Though none of those military members was tested positive for the COVID-19, the tussle continued to shake the media platforms for a long period. The theory got dumped soon by the experts. 
An analysis of the virus’s genome indicates that the outbreak wasn’t caused by a strain from a lab and likely came from wild animals instead.

Why Does The Origin of COVID19 matter?

A study shows that a large reservoir of SARS-CoV–like viruses in Horseshoe bats is a time-bomb. SARS outbreak in 2002 was ignored because it disappeared soon. 18 years later, the SARS returned as a deadly respiratory disease, COVID-19.

Note that the theory of the hypothetical man-made origin of SARS-CoV-2 was thoroughly discredited by multiple coronavirus experts!

Whatever is the reason behind COVID-19, the natural outbreak, accidental release or intentional spread, we should realize the need to handle the epidemics in a better manner. Secondly, there’s a dire need to stop playing in the Biolabs to prevent such virus attacks on living beings.

  3. This is a very debatable topic, Aditi. I’ve been having extensive conversations on the same with my family & friends, but no one theory seems to be right or wrong.

  5. Your statement “we need to handle epidemics better” is so apt. The world has a lot to learn in epidemic management. They need to pay more attention to health infrastructure.

  6. There have been tons of conspiracy theroies about covid 19. If only all those brains, energy and resources would have been spend in finding a cure, we would have had a definitive one by now.

    1. Covid 19 has got the world to its knees but as you said the conspiracy theory of who started had done its rounds when it all started. But I think now the world is just waiting for it to get over.

  11. Yes 2020 will be remember as most unfortunate year in history. thousands of people had died due to this tiny virus. I had heard most of the virus origin theory before. like the way you had explained it with proper scientific input.

  14. I wish I could delete this 2020 year from the world’s calendar, Return of SARS is actually the right theory up to some extent, though changing theories about the origin of the deadly virus is still a hot topic among my friend circle.

  15. This topic indeed is still unsettling with no one conclusive theory at hand but just the option of handling thr scenario well. And definitely a stronger check, regulatory machinery is required to kind of control the bio labs from such threatening experiments

  21. Well, the mysteries surrounding Covid-19 has been in debate since the last 10 months. But I guess, now the world is just waiting to get over with it and stand up on its feet once again. I am interested to know about the other mysteries of 2020.

  24. In the month of Feb, my 5 year old one day came back from school and said that bats were spreading Chinese virus and soon bats would reach India. We made fun of him and said it was China’s problem. Little did we know that this would happen in reality. Whatever is the origin of virus, it has affected the whole world badly and we could only think about why it was not stopped at the right moment.

  26. It’s an unsolved mystery for sure, and I wonder what will ever lead to a conclusive solution! At this point though, I would rather see energies focused on ending the virus (rather than finding the beginning!)

  34. A debatable topic with various possibilities! And rightly pointed out, whatever may be the cause or origin, handling it with utmost care, caution and efficiency is more significant now.
    Praying that the new normal doesn’t become the defining guidelines of life and survival, for current and future generations.

  35. Somehow I have the feeling that it is manmade. I dunno much about it but think it was created in a lab and dispersed in Hong Kong where there lots of rallies. A monster that just got out of hand and they didn’t know how to control it.

  39. The origin of virus is a political debate. As you mentioned, once it has spread it is the responsibility of the respective countries to handle in the best possible way. The number of cases and fatalities show how each country was able to handle this pandemic.

  40. We definitely need to handle the epidemic better. Besides the origin, the spread could have been controlled if the WHO had notified the world sooner. So many lives are lost and dreams shattered but I just hope its a huge learning for world leaders to be better prepared for such incidents in the future.

  41. Just today the PIB released a tweet saying that we have doubled the cases of COVID19 in recent times. All this is in the light of continued protests for full unlock in India. Let’s hope the government takes a pragmatic view and handles the epidemic better.

  45. There are so many conspiracy theories about the virus that has everyone pointing a finger at the other. India needs better disaster and pandemic management plans. The knee jerk reactions don’t work anymore.

The mystery continues and with the number of lives that are being lost every day, I only hope that experiments in the bio labs must be taken seriously in the future. We cannot afford to have a catastrophe like this occurring in the world ever again.
