Mystery of the Old Castle on the Hill – Part 3

Mystery or a teasing reality,
We may never know the truth,
Dig the clues, brave the dangers,
Finish line seems to be near.

Continued from part 2

Daniel was awestruck by the grandeur of the majestic castle. The backdrop of dark clouds and thunder lent the sight an enchanting touch of beauty and eeriness. Although he was concerned about his missing friend, Daisy, his adventurous soul was gratified by the mere sight of the old castle on the hill. He seemed to be deeply fascinated by an unknown presence.

SMASHHHHHH……..

Spellbound Daniel woke up to the sound of the shattering glass. Someone from inside the castle had broken a window pane. He hurried towards the crash scene. It was strange that despite the broken window, he couldn’t see inside the castle. The enchantment dissipated, and Daniel remembered why he was there.

“Daisy! Daisy!!”

“I’m here, Daniel!” He turned around. Yes, it was Daisy.

“Gosh! Where have you been, girl? I was worried. The weather spooked me out and this ancient castle has something eerily attractive about it. Have you observed?” Daniel couldn’t get out of the magic of the old castle on the hill.

As he examined Daisy closely, the cuts and wounds on her face and hands became visible. Her vacant eyes seemed to have witnessed a hidden truth. By now, the darkness of the sky had become prominent, deepening the mystery of the castle.

“Daisy! What happened with you? I guess it was you who broke the window. Say something, don’t stay mum!” Daniel couldn’t disconnect himself from the plight of his friend, Daisy.
She had been a bit less enthusiastic than him but a sport throughout. Seeing her in that condition was not a welcome affair.

“Look, I’m sorry, I walked faster than you and couldn’t help you when you were in need. But, for God’s sake, tell me what led to your injuries?” Daniel wanted to know the truth. Daisy stood still for a seemingly long time, raising his curiosity.

“Sam is here.” Daniel was startled to hear that from Daisy.

“Sam? The notorious stalker? Goodness, I told you he might be following you to this hill. Where’s he? I guess he is the reason behind your injuries.” Daniel’s clenched fists ignited with seething anger.

“I wanted to tell you something but was scared. Can you promise me not to tell anyone about what I’m going to say?” Daisy started crying.

It was not a usual phase. Daisy was a bold girl who would not cry at petty matters. An unknown fear gripped Daniel when he assured Daisy to be her confidante.

“Sam is dead.”

“What? But, you just said that he’s here on the hill!”

“That is what I am saying. Sam is dead but he is with us!”

A streak of fear ran down Daniel’s body. Daisy was talking about something that he would have never trusted otherwise. But the atmosphere on the hill and the vicinity of a dark ancient castle made sure he did.

“How do you know that he’s dead? And, if you knew, you could have told me when we were talking about him while climbing up the hill. I’m unable to get you! ” Daniel got hysterical.

Daisy looked into Daniel’s eyes, “I didn’t want to tell you, perhaps because I am the one who killed Sam!”

Silence..

“That day, when he came to invite me for dinner, I promised him to meet on the hill. Sam! How could I say yes to his invitation? He is a stupid guy…..I mean he was a stupid guy. But I wanted to see him waiting for me. So, I went up the hill and checked him. Daniel, I didn’t like him but I wished he should love me forever. I deserve both worlds, don’t I?”

“I hid behind a rock and kept watching him. My only mistake was that the rock was right above the place where Sam was sitting. I enjoyed the sight of Sam waiting for me. But accepting his invite would have meant cheating on you.”

Daniel’s shocked eyes spread wide. “D…..Did you throw the rock by mistake?” He looked at her for a response. This time, he didn’t have to wait for long.

“It was a mistake, a deliberate mistake. I froze him in his happy moment when he was anticipating me by his side.” A cruel smile darkened her face.

Daniel couldn’t imagine in his wildest dreams that his closest friend could execute such a gruesome deed. With his mouth open in shock, he simply waited for the story to conclude.

All of a sudden, Daisy started crying hysterically, “You know, he’s back and wants to take revenge on me! Save me from that evil spirit, Daniel, please save me!!”

It was a strange situation for Daniel. Knowing that she had been cruel to an innocent guy like Sam and killed him brutally, how could he be on her side?

While Daniel was struggling with his inner dilemma, a lean figure emerged from the broken window. He attempted to discern the identity of the creepy figure, but the distorted features hindered his quest.

“Go back, Daniel! This girl is not the one who accompanied you to the hill. Daisy is now one of us. She made me enter the world of dissatisfied souls and I helped her join me! Hi, I am Sam.”

That’s one dark end. Energy never dissolves, it just keeps transferring from one to the other. At least Sam was nice about warning Daniel, who had no part in this play. Eerie, but thrilling.

OMG, again… this story has me on the edge of my seat! The way you describe the castle is absolutely captivating. I can almost picture the grandeur and feel the eerie beauty of the setting. And then, just when I thought things couldn’t get any more suspenseful, there’s a sudden crash and shattered glass! I can feel Daniel’s urgency and curiosity as he rushes towards the scene.
